What
is the Religious Education Program?
The
Religious Education (RE) program helps children,
youth and adults in our Fellowship to learn about
Unitarian-Universalism, our Judeo-Christian roots,
World Religions and ethical living. We believe
religious education is for people of all ages.
When
do the RE Classes begin on Sundays?
On some Sunday mornings, the minister leads a
story time in the sanctuary at the start of the
adult worship. Children will sit with their parents.
Other Sundays, children in grades K-5 begin with
a brief worship circle in the blue classroom (room
3 and 4) with Linda or another worship leader.
There is a sign in the hall and in the lobby to
indicate where the children will begin. Preschoolers
and nursery age children begin in their classrooms,
as do the middle school and senior high students.
What
class will my child be in?
Children
are enrolled in classes by age with two year age
spans. Classes for children from birth to 4 years
are in the nursery and preschool classes. Children
from Kindergarten to 5th grade will meet together
for the first part of class. Middle school youth
(6th-8th grades) are in the yellow classroom and
senior youth are in the green classroom at the
end of the hall. If you need more information,
please contact the D.R.E. Child care is available
during the service.
What
is taught in the children's classes?
We
use curricula published by the UU Department of
Education at our headquarters in Boston. The courses
use the discovery method in teaching: each course
has questions built into them, as well as answers.
They contain diverse materials designed to stimulate
the thoughts of children. Equally important, each
curriculum allows for individual answers to fit
the unique-ness of each child. We encourage each
child to think about how he or she can put the
principles into action in their daily lives.
What is my child's curriculum?
There
is a descriptive brochure that lists each curriculum
being taught and the names of the class leaders.
This brochure is available in the lobby in the
pamphlet rack or in the R.E. office. How
do I register my child?
Registration
forms are available online at the website, from
the Director, the R.E. office or a member of the
Religious Education committee. Simply fill out
the form and hand it in. There is no fee.
What
are my responsibilities as a parent?
Parents
volunteer to lead children's classes during the
year or assist when called upon for a special task.
Clear lesson plans are provided, as well as training,
to prepare one for leading a class. Parents can
take part in planning the program by serving on
the RE Committee.
How
is the RE Program supported?
The
Religious Education Program is funded from the
budget of the Fellowship. Members and friends annually
pledge their fair share to the overall budget,
and part of that money is used to support the Religious
Education Program. Our budget is over $3,000 a
year.
Who
coordinates the RE Program?
Linda
Volkersz, who is a religious educator and DRE (Director
of Religious Education) is employed for two-thirds
time and coordinate the Program with the aid of
the Religious Education Committee, made up of volunteers
who are willing to serve in the Religious Education
Ministry. The program is a cooperative one, in
which made volunteers are needed to lead classes,
lead intergenerational services and other activities.
Whom
do I ask for more information?
You
may make an appointment on any Sunday to talk to
the Director of Religious Education, Linda Volkersz,
by calling her at the Fellowship office (751-0297)
or calling her at her home (751-6089). You may
also contact her by email. Her email address is
on the website at dre@uufsb.org.
