Hours: 27 hours per week
Compensation: based upon UUA fair compensation guidelines
Job type/term: Part-Time, Temporary - Acting DRE for 12-18 months, may apply for permanent position thereafter

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Stony Brook (UUFSB) is a dynamic, mid-sized congregation
seeking a Director of Religious Education (DRE) to facilitate a growing religious education program.
We seek an energetic person who has an understanding of the UU principles and a passion for
assisting children and youth in their spiritual journeys. Working within the framework of the UUFSB
mission, the DRE collaborates with the RE committee to develop religious education programming for
children in preschool through high school and oversees the nursery care program for infants to three-
year-olds.

Responsibilities of the DRE include:

ADMINISTRATION:

Recruiting volunteer RE leaders and Youth leaders for RE programs
Meeting regularly with the RE committee
Meeting regularly with the Minister
Meeting regularly and reporting to the board
Keeping records on enrollment and attendance
Overseeing the RE budget with support from the RE chair

SUPERVISION:

Supervising RE classes and youth programs
Supervising childcare on Sundays
Maintaining UUA 'safe congregation' recommendations in all RE programs
Providing training for RE and Youth leaders of RE programs

 PROGRAMMING:

Selecting and adapting curricula to meet the needs of UUFSB children and youth
Coordinating the summer RE program
Developing and promoting the youth program
Acting as liaison to the Long Island Area Council for programs involving RE, such as LIYUUTH, OWL,
COA and Sophia Fahs Camp

WORSHIP:

Designing and coordinating age-appropriate worship for the children
Working collaboratively with the RE committee and minister to create and facilitate multi-generational
services

COMMUNICATION:

Providing regular communication to the Congregation about RE matters
Publicizing opportunities for youth to engage in Congregational and denominational life
Preparing an annual report summarizing the state of the RE program and establishing goals for the
coming year

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

Attending conferences and workshops as part of continuing education

 SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills for interacting with children, youth, and
adults, have demonstrated an ability to work collegially with professional leaders, and have previous
experience working with children.

COMMENTS:

Salary for this part-time (2/3) position will be based on UUA fair compensation guidelines and take
into consideration the candidate¹s experience and level of professional training.
