Pastoral Assistants (PA’s) are a group of friendly people who assist the minister with outreach to members of the congregation. Through the coordination of the Care Ministry sub-committee, PA’s send cards of congratulation, wishes for a speedy recovery, condolence, and sometimes cheerful messages just to keep in touch. They may visit members in the hospital, or those who are homebound. When life’s unexpected jolts occur and food is too difficult to think about, PA’s may deliver a meal or two. If a congregant needs a ride to the doctor’s office PA’s are there to offer transportation.
The Care Ministry is only one of the PA’s important functions, however. PA’s receive training, and provide important workshops for members of the congregation. For example, two of these workshops have addressed the topics of bereavement, and listening skills. Some of the training issues have been: substance abuse, hospital visits, bereavement, suicide awareness, listening skills, and the common problems of aging.
